The 2020 Under 22s British open ended in a fiery affair between the Birmingham Panthers and the Derby Cobras.
In their first British Open Campaign Birmingham Panthers, coached by Zaheer Suliman had not dropped a single point all day coming into the final winning all 4 skins in both group games and the semi-final against Birmingham Panthers B. The Derby Cobras also won all of their games throughout the day and headed into the final looking to make it six Under 22 British Open Titles in a row, and Derby Captain Kabeer Imtiaz looking to end his Under 22 Open Career on a high in his last year of eligibility for the tournament. This game was always set for a tight affair with 13 out of the 16 players in the final all featuring in the preliminary squads for the upcoming world cup with the Men’s and 22 and under teams respectively.
Birmingham Panthers got off to a great start in the final with Jamie Hall cleaning up England Men’s opening batsman Kabeer Imtiaz in the first over of the game and constant pressure from the Panthers Left Cobras on -4 after the first batting pair. Derby Cobras then went on to make 49 off their 16 overs. Panthers got off to a somewhat slow start making only 18 off the first two skins, at this point Derby Cobras were still firmly in the contest before Panther’s 3rd and 4th pair batted superbly to close the game out scoring 56 off their 16 overs. Zaheer Suliman brought experience and the winning mentality to the young panther’s side helping them to win their first Under 22 British Open title, but congratulations to Derby who showed great fight in the final and their incredible British Open title run.
